10 Poisonous Plants in Florida and Safety Precautions

My family is planning its first camping trip. We are not a family of campers, but we figure with the bad economic times, camping is a good choice for a vacation for a family in Florida. Our daughter mentioned that many plants look alike; how would she know if they were edible or not. Her example was berries, as many plants produce berries. It is important to know which plants are poisonous to protect your family. Many of these plants are also found in surrounding states or states with a similar climate. We made a trip to our local library to find books that would provide us with information. That information is listed here.

1) Rosary Pea. The chemical name is Santa Juana. This plant is found mostly in south Florida. You can notice it by a leaf that is long and pods that grow on the branches. When you open the branches, the berries are red.

2) Pothos. this is a plan that grows close to the ground. The leaves on this lant are shiny and glossy. The plant does not grow any berries or flowers. You probably wouldn’t have to worry about your children trying to pick anything off of this plant or trying to eat it.

3) Peace Lily. This grows throughout the whole state. It is recognizable but the pretty
white lilies that grow on the branches. It grows as a bush near the ground.

4) Croton. This is a plant that is green on the top side and purple or dark red on the underside. It looks like a coleus. Some say that you will begin to itch by just touching the Croton.

5) Lantana. This is a plant that your child might get into. It produces pretty yellow flowers with blue berries growing next to the flowers. Your child might mistake the berries for blue berries.

6) Chinaberry. This plant produces bright green berries. Some children might mistake them for wild grapes and try to eat them. This plant grows in the entire state of Florida.

7) Brazilina Pepper or the pimienta roja. This plant resembles cranberries. I had a friend who picked them while camping, but luckily someone informed her they were probably brazilina peppers. No one knows how the plant got its name, as it doesn’t involve peppers in any stage.

8) Holly. Everyone is of course familiar with this plant from Christmas decorating. The leaves are shiny and the plant produces little red berries that look similar to cranberries.

9) Oleandor. The chemical name is adlefa rosa francesa. The flowers are a very pretty purple that grow on the end of the branch. This plant sometimes grows to about a foot and a half. Touching the plant is not dangerous, but prolonged contact can irritate the skin.

10) Angels trumpet. I have these in my yard and did not know that they were poisonous. While many people grow these, gardeners suggest not cutting them as flowers for your house as oils from the plants could make you sick. How can you avoid these plants and what safety precautions should your family take?

1) The number one thing to do is to check the area you are camping to see which poisonous plants are found in the area. I would suggest showing your children pictures of the plants so they are familiar with them.

2) Be sure to have the number of the local poison control center handy in case of consumption or contact with a poisonous plant

3) Some people suggest having benedryl on hand. While it won’t prevent a reaction from the poison, it can lessen it until help can arrive.

4) Teach your child to avoid playing with any plants, and especially warn them to not put leaves, berries or any part of plants in their mouths.

5) Monitor your children at all times outdoors. Besides plants, you don’t know what other dangers there could be to your child in the great outdoors. 10 Questions You Should Ask to Yourself

Be all you can be, but it’s not always in the Army. I often see myself as somewhat contented with my life the way things are, but of course it’s hard to think of anything else when where are real issues to be discussed.

Still I aspire for something deeper and more meaningful.

So we’re all pelted with problems. Honestly it shouldn’t even bother or even hinder us to becoming all we ought to be. Aspirations as kids should continue to live within us, even though it would be short-lived or as long as we could hold on to the dream. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks… or can they?

1. What do I really want?
The question of the ages. So many things you want to do with your life and so little time to even go about during the day.

Find something that you are good at can help realize that small step towards improvement. Diligence is the key to know that it is worth it.

2. Should I really change?
Today’s generation has taken another level of redefining ‘self’, or at least that’s what the kids are saying. Having an army of teenage nieces and nephews has taught me that there are far worse things that they could have had than acne or maybe even promiscuity. So how does that fit into your lifestyle?

If history has taught us one thing, it’s the life that we have gone through. Try to see if partying Seventies style wouldn’t appeal to the younger generation, but dancing is part of partying. Watch them applaud after showing them how to really dance than break their bones in break-dancing.

3. What’s the bright side in all of this?
With so much is happening around us there seem to be no room for even considering that light at the end of the tunnel. We can still see it as something positive without undergoing so much scrutiny. And if it’s a train at the end of the tunnel, take it for a ride and see what makes the world go round!

4. Am I comfortable with what I’m doing?
There’s always the easy way and the right way when it comes to deciding what goes with which shoes, or purse, shirt and whatnot. It doesn’t take a genius to see yourself as someone unique, or else we’ll all be equally the same in everything we do. Variety brings in very interesting and exciting questions to be experimented.

5. Have I done enough for myself?
Have you, or is there something more you want to do? Discontentment in every aspect can be dangerous in large doses, but in small amounts you’ll be able to see and do stuff you could never imagine doing.

6. Am I happy at where I am today?
It’s an unfair question so let it be an answer! You love being a good and loving mom or dad to your kids, then take it up a notch! Your kids will love you forever. The same goes with everyday life!

7. Am I appealing to the opposite sex?
So maybe I don’t have an answer to that, but that doesn’t mean I can’t try it, though. Whether you shape-up, change the way you wear your clothes or hair, or even your attitude towards people, you should always remember it will always be for your own benefit.

8. How much could I have?
I suppose in this case there is no such things on having things too much or too little, but it’s more on how badly you really need it. I’d like to have lots of money, no denying that, but the question is that how much are you willing to work for it?

9. What motivates me?
What motivates you? It’s an answer you have to find out for yourself. There are so many things that can make everyone happy, but to choose one of the may be the hardest part. It’s not like you can’t have one serving of your favorite food in a buffet and that’s it. Just try it piece by piece.

10. What Really Makes You Tick?
So? What really makes you tick? You can be just about anything you always wanted to be, but to realize that attaining something that may seem very difficult is already giving up before you even start that journey. Always remember, that self-improvement is not just about the physical or philosophical change you have to undergo, but it’s something that you really want.

10 Quick and Easy Meal Ideas

When I was about 16, I began cooking for my dad and I when my mom was at her second shift, full time job. Being an only child and a child of a father that really didn’t know much about cooking, it was all up to me. I can’t really complain because I truly loved it. I loved experimenting and listening to my father compliment me on every dish I served. Because I loved cooking and took great pride in it, I would spend hours in the kitchen, perfecting every little detail about the meal, down to the way the silverware was placed inside the perfectly folded dinner napkin. Thirteen years, three children and one husband later I finally realized that perfection is not an option. Time is much more valuable than perfection. After all, I used to spend 2 hours on a meal that was gone in 15 minutes. My focus now is quick and easy. Every mom should have a list of quick and easy meals. Slaving in the kitchen all day does not prove that you are a better mom or love your kids any more than the next mom, it just shows that you don’t know how to use your time wisely. The more time you spend in the kitchen, the less time you are spending with your kids and husband. You’ll also find out that the crockpot can be your best friend. Below are 10 fast and simple recipes that are common in my household and I haven’t had any complaints yet. Since we are a family of five, you may have to adjust the ingredients according to your family size or be prepared to have some leftovers for the next day, which can also lead to saving even more time!

Mushroom Steak- Place a family size pack of beef steaks in a large crockpot. Add one can of condensed mushroom soup. Add a little water, a pinch of salt and a pinch of pepper. Cook on high for about 6 hours. The steak will be tender and full of flavor. To make it more flavorful, add a slice of swiss cheese to the top of each steak.

Chili- Brown 2 lbs of ground beef in skillet. Add cooked ground beef, one can of tomato juice, one package of chili seasoning, one can of diced tomatoes, half an onion and one can of kidney or chili beans. Let cook for 3 hours. Serve on top of fritos and add shredded cheese to the top.

Creamy Chicken- Place 6 boneless chicken breast in a 13in x 9in baking dish. Add one can of condensed cream of chicken soup. Bake at 400 for about an hour. Remove when chicken is done.

BBQ Pork Chops- Place about 6 pork chops in large crock pot. Add one bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce. Cook on high for about 6 hours.

Meatloaf- Mix 3 lbs ground beef, a package of meatloaf seasoning, a can of diced tomatoes, half an onion, 2 eggs and 6 crackers, salt and pepper (if desired) in large bowl. Once the mixture is evenly mixed, transfer into large crock pot and pack until the top is even. Add some ketchup to the top and cook on high for about 6 hours.

Homemade Vegetable Soup- In large crockpot combine one or two cans of vegetable juice, half of a bag of frozen sliced okra, one can of each of the following vegetables: corn, green beans, peas, diced tomatoes, carrots and sliced potatoes. Cook on high for about 3 hours.

Shrimp Mac & Cheese- Prepare 2 boxes of macaroni and cheese (the kind that comes with the creamy cheese). Cook 2 bags of salad shrimp and add to macaroni and cheese. Next, slice a can of black olives and add to mixture. My kids love this one!

Chicken and Dumplins- Place 3 boneless chicken breasts and one can chicken broth in large crockpot, cook on high for 6 hours. Remove chicken and place in large bowl to the side (leaving the juice in the crockpot). Add frozen dumplins to crock pot or cut up canned biscuits to bite size pieces and add to crockpot. Cook until done and add dumplins and juice to chicken.

Tuna Casserole- Cook one bag of egg noodles according to directions. Add 2 cans of tuna, peas, mayonaisse and salt and pepper (if desired) to noodles. Put in refrigerator until chilled.

Creamy Chicken & Bisquits- Place 6 boneless chicken breasts and one can of condensed cheese soup to crockpot. Cook on high for 6 hours. After chicken is nice and tender, shred it by taking a fork and pulling the pieces apart, then add one can of carrots and one can of peas. Next, prepare bisquits as directed. When bisquits are finished, open each bisquit on plate and serve chicken mixture on top.

10 Pros and Cons About Online Holiday Shopping

Every year, I tell myself I won’t go through the headache of doing my holiday shopping at local stores. Instead, I make a pledge to avoid the crowds and do my shopping online. And, every year, I end up going to the stores anyway, though I might buy one or two of my gifts over the Internet.

While the ability to shop online is a wonderful option for consumers, it’s not for everyone. If you’re an Internet novice, it’s best to weigh the pros and cons before making the plunge and buying off of some Web site.

5 Pros:

You don’t have the crowds. There’s no shoving your way through other customers or standing in line for 30 minutes at the check out because the person in front of you picked up an item without a UPC code.

You have more of a selection. The nice thing about the World Wide Web is the fact you have more stores to choose from than you have in your home town. And, you are able to find items there that you might not be able to buy locally.

You can shop any time. Around here, most stores close by 9 p.m. That doesn’t give me a whole lot of time to do my shopping when you figure I don’t get home from work until almost 6. You can shop online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It’s much easier to shop by price. Let’s say you want to buy something for a niece or nephew but don’t want to spend more than $10. The nice thing about most online stores is you can sort the items by price. In fact, some even allow you to set a limit about how much you’re willing to spend. It’s also a lot easier to shop around for the best deal.

You can earn bonuses for your shopping. One of the reasons I do a lot of my shopping online is because I’m a member of sites like and If I go through these sites first, I can earn points that can be used for gift cards or receive a percentage of my money back.

Identity theft is a reality. The risk can be reduced by shopping on trusted sites but it is much easier to get your identity stolen if you do a lot of shopping over the Internet.

You don’t always get the full information. If you’re buying clothes, you won’t be able to tell if they are going to fit. If you’re ordering something else, you won’t be able to tell what kind of condition it’s in or whether it is the exact same item you wanted.

You could end up paying more. I usually can find items for less than the local stores are charging. But, by the time you factor in shipping & handling costs, you could end up spending more on the item than you would if you bought it locally. Some sites offer free shipping, but many of those require a minimum purchase.

You have to depend on it being delivered on time. Just this past summer, my sister-in-law ordered a toy for my daughter (for her birthday) and had it shipped directly to our house. It was supposed to arrive three days later. We got it four weeks later. If you’re going to do your shopping online, you have to do it early; just in case there are delays.

It’s much harder to return the items. People aren’t always going to like the gift you buy them. Or, they may already have it. Or, it might not be the right size. Or, there might be a defect. If you order the item online from a major retailer like Wal-mart or Target, they probably could return it directly to the store. But, if you bought it from another site, that might not be as easy to do.

So, while the option to do your holiday shopping online is definitely a tempting one, it’s best to at least do part of your shopping the more traditional way; or, at very least, take precautions just in case your online shopping backfires on you.

10 Reasonable Suggestions on How to Avoid Gaining Weight on a Cruise

My family and I recently went on our first Caribbean cruise and it was great. The ship was beautiful, the excursions were memorable and the food, oh the food was delicious and plentiful. It seemed a minute didn’t go by where we couldn’t get something to eat. It is beautifully displayed and, except for the sit-down dinner, is all-you-eat. First the “all-you-can-eat” concept should be outlawed in this country. Who thought of this anyway? And on a cruise, there is no avoiding it. So here are a few suggestions that worked for me.

Suggestion #1: Work out at the beautiful gym on the ship. The view is fantastic and if it isn’t too crowded, you can work out longer. The pressure’s off to hurry up and finish exercising because you have to get back to work. You have a lot of time— you’re on vacation. The longer you work out the more you can eat and isn’t that why most of us work out anyway!

Suggestion #2: Take a smaller plate if they are available. This forces you to take smaller portions, something we should all learn to do. Our portion sizes are so out of whack these days.

Suggestion #3: Soda is an additional expense on a cruise. Water, lemonade, ice tea, juice and coffee are included in your overall cost, so this is a no-brainer. Skip the soda and you’ll save money and avoid empty calories at the same time. Also reach for the skim milk at breakfast. Unless you’re an infant, you don’t need the extra milk fat in lowfat or whole milk.

Suggestion #4: Create a healthy salad at their wonderful salad bar, then sit down and eat this first. This was easy for me because the salad bar on our cruise was separate from the buffet, so there wasn’t the temptation to sidestep over there. Not only will you feel good about yourself, you also will be less hungry and therefore less likely to pig out on the bad stuff.

Suggestion #5: Avoid the foods that are heavily sauced. The sauces are most likely made of heavy cream and butter, greatly increasing the calorie and fat content and for me, the stomach ache factor. If you can’t resist, remember the smaller plate suggestion.

Suggestion #6: Migrate to the dishes with the most vegetables. Even if there is a heavy sauce on it, at least you are getting some veggies.

Suggestion #7: This is the toughest one for me. The Dreaded Dessert Bar! All-you-can-eat cheesecake, chocolate cake, mousse, cookies, pies, apple strudel….okay you get my point. And they also have all-you-can-eat fresh fruit. So just as you did with the salad, load up your plate—large one here is encouraged—and eat the fruit first. Then you feel better about eating that delicious key lime pie or chocolate cheesecake and less likely to return for a second (or third) serving.

Suggestion #8: Eat slowly. You’re on vacation. This is perfect time to really enjoy your food with your family and you’ll probably eat less too.

Suggestion #9: Food is available poolside as well. One pool offered hamburgers and hot dogs while the other served salads, fresh fruit, pasta salad and chicken. Stay near the pool with the healthier food so you’re not tempted to grab a hamburger and fries.

Suggestion #10: There was a midnight buffet one night. I guess in case we hadn’t gotten enough food during the day! My suggestion on this one: go to bed before midnight.

1. If you are an ice-cream lover, try fat-free frozen yogurt instead of higher fat ice-cream, or try other fat-free dessert options, such as fat-free angel food cake, fat-free gelatins, or ripe fruits.

2. When you do decide to eat higher-fat foods, take smaller portions of the high-fat item and larger portions of other things on the menu, like vegetables, pasta, whole-grains, and fruit.

3. Buy low-fat or fat-free versions of mayonnaise and salad dressing. Rather than pouring the dressing directly onto your salad, consider dipping each bite into a side dish of dressing. This way you can pre-measure and control the amount you consume.

Or you can use two egg whites to equal a whole egg. If you are coating a food for baking, and you usually dip the food into an egg mixture, use only egg whites. Beat the egg whites a bit first to help with coating.

10. Purchase soup stock in fat-free versions. If you use soup stock for soups, casseroles, and rice dishes, you can still flavor your dish sufficiently with fat-free versions and extra spices and herbs for flavor. Remember to garnish your foods too, for visual and taste appeal.

10 Real Ways I Cope with Depression: A Story from the Battle Trenches

Troubled home, broken family unit, abuse, and the list goes on. These are just some of the reasons a child can develop a severe depression over time. I was terribly depressed as a child. It took me until my late teens and early twenties to realize this. That’s when the real breakdown came for me. I was 18 years old the first time my depression got the better of me. I remember lying on the sofa and crying uncontrollably for hours. I went into the bathroom, locked the door, sat in front of the toilet, watched the water swirl down the bowl, and I wished to God it was me. Years of deeper depression ensued, along with a 2 year struggle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome between the years of 17 and 19. At that time CFS was a largely under-reported illness. The CFS was crippling the first year and often I didn’t have the energy to do much of anything at all. Several years of my life were spent trying to get over my depression, and in many ways I am just now recovering. Even now I sometimes relapse and have bouts of malaise that can last for days or weeks.

In the beginning of my depression I often wanted to end it all, if it meant ending the pain and emotional torment I was suffering. I knew I had a problem when death preoccupied my thoughts at least 95 percent of any given day. During those dark moments I reflected on many ways that I could end my time on this miserable little planet. Thankfully, I never followed through on my macabre ideas, which varied from the traditional sleeping pills and whiskey, to the more messy and less graceful throwing myself from a moving vehicle (while on the freeway). Yes I was a pretty sick young woman. I admit with no embarrassment that I needed to be healed. I never sought traditional therapy. I don’t recommend doing this because it could be dangerous for a suicidal person to try and deal with depression on their own. I realize now that I was too ashamed to seek help because I saw my depression as a weakness that I couldn’t overcome. I felt powerless to change my situation and was too hopeless to try. The sorrow I felt was a soul-deep anguish that permeated every level of my existence.

Then one day I remembered reading somewhere about a method of tough-love when dealing with depression. I decided that I would apply this hard-hitting rule of thumb to myself. Basically, my rule was that every minute of my day would be filled with activities. I told myself I would not think about my depression as much as I could help it. I allowed myself a specific time each night before I went to bed to write down and indulge in my feelings of misery. The rest of the time I’d literally write down a list of things to complete before the end of the day and do it. It was pretty brutal. Many times I failed this endeavor and many times I felt like crap when myriads of negative thoughts would invade my mind, but I clung to the lists because at least they gave me some sort of reason to continue going on. Writing and music were my refuge. I looked to them like a safe haven from my often vicious thoughts of self-harm. I’d write fictional stories of people, many whom had lives as twisted as mine was. Other times I wrote poems expressing my rage and discontent. I listened to a lot of rock, rap, hard rock, electronic and folk music. Many times I would play Chopin or Beethoven to quiet the raucous noise of my thoughts. My philosophy was to get help (from online resources’, etc. I was too ashamed to seek professional help. I was afraid to take any drugs prescription or narcotic). After the ‘help’ I received, I would structure my day so I’d have the least amount of time to think about being depressed. I found that this method gradually began to work for me, but it was a long road to where I am now.

By no means am I advocating using distractions as a means to avoid the very real issues that are the reason for your illness, rather you should look at these tips as suggestions from a traveler that’s been down the tough path that you are facing, and sometimes travels the road now and again still. The following list is a way to dull the ache a bit between the times when your therapist is not available. If you can’t afford a therapist, I recommend calling you local County’s Social Services facility. They can direct you to low-cost and sometimes free help for you depression. Many doctors will prescribe drugs for your condition such as Prozac. The choice to take these is totally up to you. I opted out on the prescription drugs because I saw them as a band aid and not a cure. But that was personal choice. Some people need these aids to cope. I ended up using homeopathic methods such as St. John’s Wort capsules for my depression, and Kava Kava for my anxiety. Also later, when I was strong enough, I implemented Yoga and Walking to help me balance myself.

I’m writing this article to let the hopeless amongst us know that there is a light at the end of this long tunnel that is your inner journey. You management and /or recovery from this emotionally crippling disease can be extremely difficult, but not impossible. You can take comfort in the fact that there are millions of heavy hearts making their way through this cruel world. If you’re reading this list, you are crossing paths with one of them who understands the slow torment you endure each day. It does get easier. I promise.

Below is my top 10 list of things to do when you feel overwhelmed by feelings of despair. None of these tips are meant to substitute for professional help. All of the suggestions are healthy and do not involve drug or alcohol use or anything else harmful to your body or mind:


Many studies have been performed on just why exercise lifts a person’s mood, and none have been conclusive. Theories from enhanced endorphin levels being the reason for a better mood after exercise, to it affected specific neurotransmitters in the brain responsible for happy thoughts abound. Who knows and who cares really, when many times exercise works so well for even severe cases of depression. For those who are bogged down by heavy thoughts of sadness, I strongly recommend yoga, as it’s neither too stressing nor demands too much from your mind or body. The zoning out and meditative qualities of yoga are especially helpful. You are encouraged not to think too hard about any specific thing and to concentrate on the flow of your breath and body. Always check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

Listening to music

Studies are now being conducted to examine the effectiveness of music therapy when dealing with depression. So far all experts can agree on is that music does affect the emotions of a person. I say that without music, I don’t know what I would have done. It has been a salvation for me during the times when no one else could understand what I was going through. When I’d listen to someone sing about what I was going through I’d be like “Yes”!

Reading an adventure or romance novel

What’s wrong with a little escapism? Nothing at all. Reading a great story has immersed me in problems that are worlds away from my own. I will always give great respect to authors of fiction, because they recognize the value of a good fantasy.

Call a suicide hotline just to talk; or visit a trusted friend

Sometimes you just need a listening ear; someone who will say nothing while you vent all your frustrations. No judgmental or critical people need apply for this position. You are being honest and stripping away pretense, giving truth with no chaser and you don’t have time for someone that puts down or belittles the things you are feeling. Choose your confidant carefully. If you can’t find a sympathetic ear, then it’s better to call a hotline.

Go visit a local spa for a full body or back massage, or have friend give you a massage.

Never underestimate the power of nurturing touch. Research shows that kneading and manipulating stress points on the body can have powerfully positive affects on a person’s mental well-being. Just go have a massage and let the calm and caring hands of the massage therapist sooth away the stress of the day. Don’t be embarrassed if you start to cry during your session. This is your body’s way of letting go what your mind cannot.


OK this is a little obvious. But many people do not indulge in the simple act of expressing on paper what they cannot put into words. This is one of the most important things you can do if you are depressed. It’s often hard to tell those close to you how you feel, so keep a journal. If you’re really brave, purposely leave it where a loved one can find it and read it. They can gain a wealth of understanding from parts of your self that you can’t deal with face to face.

Take up a Hobby

A hobby can be a positive distraction from what ails you. In many cases a person can even achieve a large amount of personal healing. So take up dance, fishing, or photography or whatever else floats your boat. It just might get you in touch with that inner person you’ve been hiding from, and bring out the source of all your sadness.


I know this sounds shallow, but retail therapy has helped me so much through many hard times of my depression. This can work for women or men. A woman might indulge in a pair of shoes she knows she can’t afford and a man might go to Best Buy and check out that plasma screen he’s been wanting to buy. If you are on a very strict budget, go to thrift stores and look for that special knick knack or vintage record you always wanted to own. Buy yourself a used item on that you’ve always wanted. That little jolt of pleasure you get from knowing you will have your package arrive in a few days will last for quite a while.

Get a hug from a friend or cuddle a pet

If you can’t afford a massage and don’t have anyone willing to give you one, then you might what to try getting a comforting hug from a friend. Holding or cuddling a pet is also a great way to release the anxieties associated with depression. Don’t have a pet? offer to sit a friends’ pet for a while. For many lonely souls this is as close to a comforting hug or embrace as they will get.

Pray or Visit a Religious mentor

Many times it helps to give up your responsibility and your power of existence to a higher force or power. If you aren’t particularly religious or don’t believe in god, you can still meditate on a force that is bigger then you, like the ocean, the earth, the universe, or another force of nature like the wind, that is beyond your control; and let the powerfulness of this force carry your own powerlessness away. Sometimes it works to acknowledge that a being or force greater and stronger then we are exists and to surrender control to it for a time.
