2008-2009 Colorado Quail Hunting Season

The 2008-2009 Colorado Quail hunting season is the time of year when quail hunters in Colorado can legally pursue and take Northern Bobwhite Quail, Gambel’s Quail and Scaled Quail in areas throughout the state of Colorado. These quail hunters must be aware of all the rules and regulations that are required to legally hunt quail in California and set in place by the Colorado Department of Natural Resources with approval from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. These two entities determine what is necessary to protect the future of this sport and its hunters by putting these rules and regulations into place. The rules and regulations that are put into place by these entities include the dates that the quail hunting season is open and the locations throughout the state where quail hunting is legal during these dates, the amount of quail that can be taken during this hunting season, the licenses that each hunter is required to possess and what weapons each hunter is allowed to use during this hunting season.

The dates of the 2008-2009 Colorado Quail hunting season are determined by the location of the hunting units throughout Colorado. According to the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, “all units east of I-25 and north of I-70 from I-25 east to Byers and Highway 36 from Byers to the Kansas line” have open quail hunting season from November 8, 2008 through January 4, 2009. From November 8, 2008 through January 19, 2009, quail hunters can pursue quail, according to the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, “in all units east of I-25 and south of I-70 from I-25 to Byers and Highway 36 from Byers to the Kansas line.” Hunters who hunt the units west of I-25 have from November 8, 2008 to January 4, 2009 to pursue and take quail. During these dates, hunters may pursue these birds from 30 minutes before sunrise until sunset and may take a daily bag limit of 8 birds and a possession limit of 24 birds.

Hunters wishing to participate in the 2008-2009 Colorado Quail hunting season must have the proper licenses. For residents of Colorado, this is a Colorado Small Game License, a Colorado Small Game 1-Day License, a Colorado Small Game Fishing and Hunting Combination License or a Colorado Life-time Small Game and Fishing License. For non-residents of Colorado, these licenses are also available. Hunters who were born after 1948 must also possess a hunter education program certificate of completion.

The weapons that can be used during this hunting season are 10 gauge or less shotguns that are only capable of holding 3 shotgun shells, hand-held bows or crossbows or falconry. Hunting dogs can also be used during the 2008-2009 Colorado Quail hunting season to pursue, bring to bay, flush, retrieve or point quail.

2008 New York Asian Film Festival Review: Kim Jin-won's "The Butcher"

A Michael Haneke film on acid, Kim Jin-won’s The Butcher is a relentless 75-minute assault on the senses. The premise is as simple as it is brutal: a group of budding filmmakers have kidnapped a group of people, chaining them together in a dank human abattoir in order to make them the unwilling stars of their torture porn epic. The film is shot on digital video entirely from POV cameras that alternate from the perspectives of the perpetrators and their victims. It is an incendiary bomb lobbed at the heart of a Korean film industry that more than ever seems to be made up of little more than minor variations on genres and formulas that have made money in the past, slick and technically impeccable creations without an ounce of soul or wit. The grimy, lo-fi aesthetic of “The Butcher” literally rubs your face in the blood, vomit, and viscera to be found within.

In its implication of the consumers of violent entertainment into its thick (a)moral web, The Butcher seems to take its cue not only from Haneke’s Funny Games, but from such American latter-day gore fests as the Saw and Hostel films. The filmmakers/torturers in the film acknowledge as much: these snuff film auteurs discuss selling their wares to the American market, aware of how much the overseas public eats this stuff up. Also, the fact that the film is shot with camera rigs attached to the heads of the victims recalls two other recent films: George Romero’s Diary of the Dead and Brian De Palma’s Redacted, both of which critique the media-saturated, You Tube world we currently live in. The Butcher one-ups them both, however, in its strategy of erasing all the music cues and other distancing devices that would give the audience some measure of comfort. The raw nature of the film’s style, especially the use of off-screen sounds of screaming and chainsaws, is used in the service of maximum audience discomfort. And in this age of Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, and Al-Qaeda beheadings staged for the internet, this film proves to be all too congruent with the global zeitgeist.

Kim Jin-won paints a grim, circular world of brutality, engaged in by both victims and perpetrators, to the extent that, as the latter scenes of the film show, there is ultimately little difference between the two. The ugliness of human nature is the obvious theme of this film. There is also a critique here of both the movie industry and our seemingly limitless appetite for violent movies, although what that critique is seems diffuse and not fully formed. And I must stress that the cliché is definitely true: this is most certainly not for the faint of heart. It is a blessing that the film is as brief as it is; any longer and Kim could be said to be as guilty of sadistic torture as the characters in the film. And I must mention that this film has one of the scariest characters of any film I’ve seen, horror or otherwise: an unnamed, large man who wears a pig mask that never comes off. This character is the twisted progeny of Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and is responsible for some of this film’s most disturbing scenes.

Viewers, consider yourselves warned.

The Butcher screens on June 21 (at midnight; and this is indeed a midnight movie if there ever was one) and June 28 at the IFC Center as part of the New York Asian Film Festival. To purchase tickets, if you dare, go to Subway Cinema’s website.

2008-2009 NFL Playoffs Round 3 Conference Championships

So we’ve come to this, the final two games before the big one. This weekend is the NFL’s Conference Championship round of the playoffs. The winners of these two games will proceed to the biggest game of the year, and could be the biggest game of some of these players careers. This year both Conference Championship games will be played on Sunday, January 18th.

The first game on Sunday will be the Eagles going to Arizona to play the Cardinals. No one would have expected these teams to be playing for a shot at the Super Bowl, but each team has seemed to catch fire as the playoffs have went on. I expect this to be an offensive showdown. If all of the Cardinals wide outs are healthy then i would think that they would have an upper hand. It is still unclear if Anquan Boldin will play, although he has been participating more and more in practice since his hamstring injury. With the onset of the Card’s running game which has all of the sudden came alive, i think that Arizona can hold off the Eagles. However, the Eagles will win if their defense plays keeps up the awesome job they have been doing as of late. I think this game will be full of points, no team will have an advantage over the other, this game will be played indoors. I really do not have a prediction on this game but if I had to pick a team I would go with the Eagles. This game will be on FOX at 3 PM. (ET)

The second game on Sunday will feature The Ravens who will travel to the Steelers. In their match-ups earlier this season, the Steelers won both, in very close fashion. Unlike the NFC Championship, I think that this will be a low scoring game, with both teams making several defensive stops. But just like the NFC game, I am unable to pick a clear cut winner. I will say that the Steelers will win if they can get Willie Parker going like they did last week. His amazing game last week shut down the Chargers defense, if he was to do the same this weekend it would cut up the Raven’s defense. The Ravens will win if they can force Big Ben into mistakes and force turnovers, like they have done so many times in recent games. The home field advantage for the Steelers will not really hurt the Ravens because they also play in extremely cold conditions. It would now seem that Terrel Suggs and Samari Rolle are still injured and have been missing a lot of practice lately, both are unlikely to play, this would give the Steelers the upper hand. Just like the NFC championship I cannot decide on the winner, but if forced to choose I would go with the Steelers. Check out this game Sunday night on CBS at 6:30 PM. (ET)

And there you have it, my break down of the up-coming games this weekend. I will of course give updates and be on the look out for my Super Bowl preview coming soon. In other NFL news, Tony Dungy has retired after 7 years as the head coach of the Colts. He was the first African-America head coach to win a Super Bowl. The Cowboys are considering the release of Terrell Owens and have already said that they are not actively seeking to re-sign Tank Johnson, which would make him a free agent and able to sign with any team who would have him. The Chargers are also considering a trade of LT, due to his recent injuries and the outstanding play of the younger but very talented running back Darren Sproles.

**UPDATE** In the first game of the day the Eagles come out flying high, but their wings would soon be clipped as the Cardinals dominated both sides of the ball in the later quarters. The Arizona Cardinals will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Which is the first time in franchise history. Final score 32-25.

**UPDATE** In the nightcap, the game was full of amazing plays, and even a moment of panic when Baltimore running back Willis McGahee was hit hard and was injured, he stayed down for what seemed like a good 5-10 minutes. The trainers had to cart him off the field, and his current status is unknown. The game would ultimately belong to the Steelers, but both teams played really hard and it could have went either way. The Steelers will represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. Final score 23-14.

So the tables are set, Steelers and Cardinals will play in Tampa for Super Bowl XLIII. Check back soon for my Super Bowl break down and my final prediction of the season.

2009 Belmont Top Contenders

It’s been a pretty exciting Triple Crown this year, despite the fact that there will be no Triple Crown winner. Even so, Calvin Borel has a chance to become the first jockey to win the Triple Crown on different horses if he and likely favorite Mine That Bird win the 2009 Belmont. But he’s going to be up against some tough contenders. This is a look at who they are and what horses will make the best bets in the field.

Calvin Borel seems confident that Mine That Bird will win the 2009 Belmont, and while he’ll probably be favored after his Kentucky Derby win and his quick close on superfilly Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness that earned him second place in that race, another horse named Charitable Man might be the real favorite in this race.

Out of the top three contenders, Charitable Man is the only one that has proved himself to be a force to be reckoned with on the Belmont track, having won both of his two races over the Belmont surface. He is 3 for 4 lifetime, and is definitely bred to get the distance; his father is 1999 Belmont winner Lemon Drop Kid, after all. He also has a great jockey on board; Alan Garcia rode longshot Da’Tara to a front-running victory last year in the Belmont. For the 2009 Belmont, he has another horse that appreciates being in front of the field in Charitable Man, and the Belmont surface traditionally plays well to frontrunners.

Charitable Man has an ugly seventh place finish on his record, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that writes him off as not being one of the top contenders in the 2009 Belmont; that race was over Polytrack, and it’s obvious that Charitable Man, like many other dirt horses, simply didn’t like the synthetic surface. If Charitable Man ends up being second favorite, he’ll definitely be one of the best bets you can make out of the field.

But he’ll be up against very tough competition in Mine That Bird and Calvin Borel, who obviously both have a lot of fight in them. Mine That Bird shares one very distinctive similarity with Charitable Man; he, too, is a son of a Belmont winner, Birdstone, who won the race in 2004. Mine That Bird is a gutsy horse, as he proved in the Kentucky Derby by squeezing through some tight spaces coming into the stretch. He also proved nay-sayers who called him a fluke wrong with his impressive second place finish to Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness; he was closing in on her very fast. So if Charitable Man doesn’t get an easy lead, he’ll definitely be running him down in the end. And even if his is favored, his odds will still be pretty good, which still makes him one of the best bets.

Mine That Bird will probably be running close to another of the top contenders through much of the race, a horse that many have forgotten named Dunkirk. He shares a similar running style to Mine That Bird, settling back further off the pace and coming home fast at the end. He started his career very impressively with a few wins, then got second to a recovering Quality Road, who would have been one the Kentucky Derby favorites if he had not gotten injured. The track that day had been playing heavily to frontrunners, and it was extremely impressive that Dunkirk closed as well as he did in that race. In the Kentucky Derby, he had all kinds of problems, and obviously did not handle the sloppy surface well at all. Dunkirk has had a good break, skipping the Preakness, and is trained by Todd Pletcher, trainer of 2007 Belmont winner Rags to Riches. Many bettors may overlook him, but his high price may make him one of the best bets in the field, and you’ll definitely want him in your exotic wagers.

As of right now, it’s looking like it will be a beautiful, sunny day for the 2009 Belmont, so we should get a fair race. And although I think these three horses are definitely the best bets in the field, the Belmont is a race that has been won by longshots quite a few times in the past, so don’t be surprised if another horse comes along and does what Mine That Bird did in the Kentucky Derby.

2009 BET Awards Become the Michael Jackson Tribute Show

The 2009 BET Awards were already set to be a big event, but now the BET Awards are something else entirely. The 2009 BET Awards had to be completely overhauled in three days time, as the BET Awards are now no longer about today’s performers and nominees. It is expected that the 2009 BET Awards are about to become the Michael Jackson tribute show instead, as the BET Awards are undergoing “a total overhaul” to honor the King of Pop.

The BET Awards had about 72 hours to work in as many Michael Jackson tributes as they could. As a result, more performers have been invited to the show, the BET Awards are expected to go on a half hour longer, and other performers had to completely change their act.

Performers like Beyonce and Ne-Yo have already changed their performances to make them Jackson-related. Kanye West, Queen Latifah, Solja Boy, T-Pain and more announced and unannounced guests will also be in attendance.

BET network chairman Debra L. Lee called the ordeal “a total overhaul.” As such, any awards and any non-Jackson performances will likely be completely overshadowed. Jamie Foxx’s hosting performance will probably also have a fair share of Jackson references, if not Jackson jokes.

The 2009 BET Awards will technically still go on with the usual business of giving awards and having a lot of songs. But Michael Jackson will undoubtedly be the star of the show, no matter what.

BET will be paying these tributes to Michael Jackson, as his legacy in the African-American community continues to be debated. After his death, Jackson was hailed as breaking barriers for young black singers, opening the door for MTV to feature African-American performers after “Thriller” pretty much forced them to.

But the controversy over his skin changes, and the lingering notion that he sold out his “blackness” over time, made Jackson as controversial in the black community as he was everywhere else.

Nevertheless, the 2009 BET Awards will kick off the next stage of Jackson tributes and mourning. After over three days of tributes and specials in the media, three days of fans paying their respect, and three days of celebrities paying respects on Twitter and the like, Jackson will now move on to get honored on the stage. After all, the music stage is where his legacy got started.

The Shrine Auditorium will host the 2009 BET Awards, at 8 p.m. EST. Tentatively, they will now go on till about 10:30 p.m.

2009 British Open Championship Leaderboard Filled with Old Favorites

The 2009 British Open championship leaderboard is a flash from the past on day 1. Originally, the 2009 British Open championship leaderboard was supposed to be led by Tiger Woods and his younger cohorts. But the 2009 Open championship has some unlikely older champions on top of the leaderboard instead. It is Tom Watson, one of the old golfing legends, who leads the 2009 British Open championship after 18 holes.

The Open championship is mostly finished for round 1, with Tom Watson ahead at -5 under par. In fact, this is the best opening round score Tom Watson has ever had at the Open championship. The 2009 British Open was hardly expected to be the place for Watson to reach that record.

Six players trail Watson in the 2009 British Open leaderboard by one shot, and none of them are Tiger Woods. For the third consecutive major, Woods struggled in the opening round, as a few closing bogeys left him at +1.

Woods is only six shots back of Watson, which is relatively low compared to his other deficits in majors this year. Unless Woods rebounds in round 2, the 2009 Open championship will leave him in another big hole by the weekend.

Whether Tom Watson keeps up the pace at the British Open or not is a brand new subplot that can rival the likes of Woods. Watson has already won a British Open championship in Turnberry in 1977, and a Senior British Open championship in 2003.

Tom Watson isn’t the only former big name to contend in the opening round of the Open championship. The leaderboard also has Mark O’Meara and Vijay Singh at two shots back, both among those at -3 under par. Ernie Els is also -2 under through 12 holes.

Traditional British Open crowd favorite Colin Montgomerie is at -1 under through 10, with two time defending champion Padraig Harrington at -1 under through six, and Sergio Garcia at even par after his first round.

The 2009 Open championship leaderboard went back in time a bit for the first day, with Tom Watson recapturing some magic. Whether it is just a novelty act before the expected leaders take over, or whether this can go on for a few more days, will be the new biggest question facing the 2009 British Open.

The first round is still in progress on TNT, with Day Two set for early tomorrow morning.
