2009 Halloween Events in Virginia

Busch Gardens Howl-O-Scream – Sept. 25 – Nov. 1 – Williamsburg, VA – Busch Gardens is one of the most beautiful theme parks in the U.S. and for a couple of weeks in the fall its beauty changes to beast for the annual Howl-O-Scream. Fear not, 90% of the rides are up and running, which is nice because the park tends to be a little less busy during the regular high traffic hours. You’ll be amazed, though, at the park’s transformation. This is an ideal Halloween event because there are attractions for every age and the scary level is clearly labeled on the park’s map. If you have small children pay close attention to the park map because it also labels areas where live actors in creepy costumes are lurking. There are new Halloween themed shows, mazes, lights, haunted houses, creepy music and much more to keep guests in the spirit.

Hunt Club Farm Halloween Festival and Haunted Hayride – Oct. 2 – 31st – Virginia Beach, VA – The Hunt Club Farms offers a wide range of Halloween activities featuring mazes, it’s famous hayride, cider, carnival rides and more. There are three pricing levels for individuals but they also offer group rates. They even provide Party Room rentals for Halloween get-togethers.

DarkWood Manor Haunted House – Oct 2-Nov 1 – Luray, VA – This is a haunted house that was built in 1880 and has many stories of murder, apparitions and unexplainable occurrences. The actors make the visit to this ghastly home even more exciting as they tell (or scream) the legends surrounding the dwelling. Noted for their original characters and professional sets, DarkWood Manor is definitely one of the top rated Halloween events in Virginia.

Haunts of Richmond Ghost Tours – Open Now through Nov 1 – Richmond, VA – A variety of Halloween related events, everything from ghost walking tours to sinister theatrical shows to pub crawls, so there are Halloween activities for everyone in your group! The walks and tours take visitors to places in VA’s capitol rumored to have paranormal activity. There are a couple of different tours to choose from…if you dare.

Ghost Train at Northwest River Park – October 15 – October 24 – Chesapeake, VA – An eerie train takes brave guests through Northwest River Park while the storytellers speak of spooky happening as they play out around the train in the dark woods of Virginia. You never know who may be waiting in the trees.

2009 Grand Slam Tennis Year in Review

The year 2009 was another banner one for the Grand Slams, starting with another Nadal and Federer classic Down Under and finishing with a five-set upset of Federer by Juan Martin del Potro in the US Open.

Australian Open 2009

The first grand slam of the year concluded amidst high drama and compelling action. The Australian Open 2009 Tennis Championship goes down in history as one of the finest Grand Slam Tournaments. On the women side USA’S Serena Williams defeated Russia’s Dinara Safina in straight sets 6-0, 6-3, to take the Women’s Title.

On the men’s side World No. 1 Rafael Nadal of Spain Defeated former Swiss champion Roger Federer in marathon battle 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 to lift the Men’s Trophy.

French Open 2009

The French open final saw an all-Russian affair, as Svetlana Kuznetsova out nerved her country women Dinara Safina, to claim her second ever Grand Slam title and first French Open title, 6-4, 6-2.

In the men’s equivalent Roger Federer of Switzerland rolled over Robin Soderling of Sweden in three sets, 6-2, 7-6, 6-4, the ninth time in a row that Federer has beaten the surprising finalist. Federer repelled the rain, thunder, and Soderling to take his rightful place among the immortals of the game by earning his record-tying 14th Grand Slam.

Wimbledon 2009

Chasing her sixth Wimbledon victory, the hopes of Venus Williams, was dashed in the women’s final when she was beaten in straight sets 7-6, 6-2 by her younger sister, Serena Williams. It was a merited win, Serena’s third Wimbledon, and the 21st time these two had faced each other in top-level professional play. It proved, beyond doubt, that since the retirement of Justine Henin a year ago and the struggle that Maria Sharapova has experienced in coming back from a shoulder operation, the Williams sisters are the undisputed rulers’ women’s tennis.

Roger Federer’s epic and historic victory in the men’s singles final brought the 123rd Championships to a fitting climax in the evening sunshine on Centre Court. After four and a quarter hours he finally overcame the American Andy Roddick in a 30-game fifth set 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14, winner the longest in Wimbledon history, to claim a record 15th Grand Slam title. How appropriate it was that Pete Sampras was in the audience to witness Federer breaking his record 14 Grand Slam Titles. A record previously shared by both men.

US Open 2009

By the time the US Open rolled in Kim Clijsters of Belgium was in a monstrous mood. Clijsters completed the mother of all comebacks by winning the US Open in just her third tournament since ending a two-and-a-half-year retirement and 18 months after giving birth to her daughter Jada, when she stopped 19 year old Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, 7-5, 6-3 to win her second US Open since (2005).

Clijsters had to beat world No. 8 Wozniacki, plus both Williams sisters and top-20 players Marion Bartoli and Li Na. The final was a solid but unspectacular display of tennis against Wozniacki, with Clijsters taking the initiative and overpowering the steady Wozniacki for much of the match.

2009 Heisman Candidates that Aren't Named Tebow, Bradford or McCoy

Every list of Heisman Trophy candidates begins with Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy in some order. Are there good chances one of them will win? Yes. Are they the only Heisman potentials in the country? No. These are some of the Heisman Trophy candidates that aren’t named Tebow, Bradford or McCoy.

Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State QB
Terrelly Pryor is in just his second year in college football but in Ohio State they ask you to grow up fast. Asking Pryor to beat USC at the beginning of the season might be asking too much. If Pryor wins after then he could hang around in the Heisman race.

Max Hall, BYU QB
The BYU non-conference schedule is pretty tough. If BYU somehow survives, and by that I mean go 3 – 1, then Max Hall will have a victory over either Oklahoma or Florida State going into the conference schedule. Just going undefeated in his conference won’t cut it though.

Zac Robinson, Oklahoma State QB and Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State WR
Call me crazy if you want to but Oklahoma State, not Oklahoma, is going to be the Longhorns’ toughest competition in the Big 12. The quarterback and wide receiver tandem is the best in the country and we know those Big 12 teams like running up the score.

Jahvid Best, California RB
As long as the Golden Bears have Jahvid Best they aren’t out of any games. Best was third in the nation in rushing yards and first among FBS players in yards per carry. If Best has a great game against Oregon and USC then he has to be considered.

Tyrod Taylor, Virginia Tech QB
In 2008 Tyrod Taylor had 1,036 yards passing and 738 yards rushing but twice he did not play the whole game due to injury. A year old, better and more experienced plus two more games and Tyrod Taylor could break the 1,000 yard mark in rushing.

Juice Williams, Illinois QB
Juice Williams is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the country but his problem will be the team he plays for. Illinois isn’t going to finish any better than fourth with three or four losses.

Taylor Potts, Texas Tech QB
Graham Harrell wasn’t drafted and reports out of camp on Michael Crabtree are not good so far. Can we agree that the Red Raiders’ offense is just a good system and nothing else? Taylor Potts is the new quarterback that is going to look 10 times better than he is.

DeMarco Murray, Oklahoma RB
Sam Bradford had his Heisman glory already. In 2009 we need more focus on DeMarco Murray. Unfortunately some will vote for Sam Bradford and that would take away votes for Murray.
