2011 Tax Day Freebies

2011 Tax Day Freebies

We hate taxes and all businesses know that. So to try and cheer us up on an otherwise dreadful day, many businesses give away freebies. It’s nice to be appreciated by local businesses and you may even find a new product you love! To avoid disappointment I strongly suggest that you call your local business to make sure they are participating in the event.

Another note for 2011 – Tax day is considered as April 18th this year due to the weekend. So when checking into these offers, remember that some may be available as early as the 15th, but others not until April 18th.

HBO and Cinemax are doing a free preview Tax Day weekend which will be from April 15 until April 18th this year. Just call your local cable company or satellite provider to see if they are participating. If the weather is yucky, this would make for a great family movie weekend!

MaggieMoo is handing out free ice cream sundaes from 3pm – 6pm on April 18th. The sundae is the MaggieMoo’s Crumb Cake Fundae which features Hostess Cinnamon Crumb Cake, caramel, sauce, mixed nuts and whipped cream on cinnamon ice cream. Yum Yum! Go to to find your local treatery.

Cinnabon bakeries is also participating in a Tax Day freebie. Cinnabon will be handing out their “Tax Day Bites” which consists of two Cinnabon Bites to each customer to stops by. This will be on April 18th from 6pm to 8pm only. Make sure you call ahead to ensure your location is participating.

If you want to get started on that New Years resolution that you just haven’t gotten around to starting yet and want to check out a gym – this is the day! You can stop in to Bally Total Fitness on April 18th for a free workout! If you are already a member no worries, they have a deal for you too! From April 15-21, current members can get a free 30 minute personal training session!

Once you have eaten your goodies and then worked off the calories you will probably need a little relaxation. HydroMassage is giving out free massages! And who doesn’t need a free massage? Just go to to find a HydroMassage near you then print a coupon. It is suggested that you call ahead and schedule your massage. The dates for this are April 14 – 18th.

Taco Del Mar is giving away free taco’s again this year! Call ahead to your local establishment to make sure they are participating.

McCormick & Schmick’s is doing a two day promotion. On Friday the 15th you join them for Happy Hour and receive a gift certificate for $10.40. Then on Monday you can go back and use that gift certificate for entrees and drink specials priced at… you guessed it… $10.40.

California Tortilla is giving away free chips and queso with any purchase.

IHop is giving away free kids meals the entire month of April. One free kids meals per adult entree every day for the month of April from 4pm – 10pm.

Office Depot is providing customers with free copies of their 2010 tax returns! You can copy up to 25 single sided pages of your 2010 taxes at nationwide Office Depot locations.

There are many companies who are not participating this year. But I guess we are all stretched thin this year. I also encourage you to ask around your local establishments to see if they are having any tax day freebies. It never hurts to ask.

There will also be a lot of discount codes and online sales this year on tax weekend. Be on the lookout for some great deals.

2011 Rhode Island National Guard Air Show

It must be summer now – the air show is just around the corner. It is generally held on the last weekend in June, which falls on the 25th and the 26th in the year 2011. The RI National Guard maintains an up-to-the-last-minute Web site, which they will become even more vigilant about updating as the big weekend approaches. This is New England, after all, and the weather is subject to change without much notice. Several of the aircraft, particularly the fighter jets, need sufficient visibility in order to fly safely. There isn’t much of a margin for error if you are piloting one of those jets!

The Blue Angels perform on alternate years, with fighter jets from countries such as Britain or Canada performing when the Blue Angels are not here. Local residents of the communities near Quonset can hear any of those jets as they arrive, in time to practice the Friday before the air show performance. All of the jets are loud, but the Blue Angels are the loudest. It can be annoying if one is trying to have a cook-out, relax outside, or even inside, but it is only for a few hours each day that you can hear them flying back and forth. As someone once said, “Well, it is not as if they are dropping bombs on us. We ought to be really thankful for all of them.”

The Blue Angels are billed as the highlight of the air show, but there are many other exciting performances scheduled by aerial acrobatic teams. There is one group that flies vintage WWII aircraft, the Geico Skytypers ; another that does amazing precision sky diving and uses very fast and high-tech parachutes, the Red Bull Air Force.

The gates to the Quonset Naval Air Base will open at 9:00 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday; with the show slated to start at 10:00 a.m. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the base, nor are coolers (think of how easy it would be to hide something in one of those if you had bad intentions!), although patrons can bring in their own food, and food will be available at the base. Patrons may also leave the base and return at a later time. Parking is free, and so is admission; there will be a voluntary donation taken to benefit Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, RI. For a thorough list of the regulations applying to patrons of the air show, and the most recent schedule, as well as some awesome photographs of past air shows, click hereto navigate to the RI National Guard Air Show Web site.

The author’s own experience living in the nearby town of North Kingstown for over ten years, and her memories of attending the air show as a girl.

2011 Rock and Roll Tours Not Coming to San Diego

San Diego is a great place for rock and roll shows. We have Humphreys by the Bay, the Casbah, House of Blues, 4th and B, Cricket Wireless, the casinos, and of course, the crown jewel of the scene: The Belly Up Tavern. But sometimes, the big acts don’t make it down to America’s finest city. Here’s a look at the top 5 acts out on the road that will not be coming to San Diego this year and the ideal venue for them to play if they were.

5. The Cars
Back together after over 20 years of separation, this perennial new wave rock band has recorded a new album and is taking it to the people. Unfortunately, they have only announced 7 dates so far. But, Los Angeles is one of them. So in two hours, (or with traffic, you could be talking 3 plus hours), you can see a true rock treasure light up the Hollywood Palladium.
Ideal San Diego Venue: 2 nights at the Belly Up

4. Phish
The jam band extraordinaire is out on the road for the first time in years. Always a treat live, you never know what song or whole album they are going to launch into next. Phish will not be playing San Diego on this tour. They get as close as Los Angeles, playing the legendary Hollywood Bowl, but no SD dates. I really don’t think we have a venue to match their size and popularity.
Ideal San Diego Venue: none

3. U2
It’s the big rock and roll tour of the year from the biggest rock and roll band in the world! U2 are back on the road after Bono recovered from his back surgery, and they have brought with them an open air stage that allows them to play massive stadiums. The closest they get to San Diego is Angels Stadium in Anaheim. Hey, we got a professional ball park here, too!
Ideal San Diego Venue: Petco Park

2. Bob Seger
Why did I rank Bob Seger over U2? Sentimental, I guess, and because Seger is hinting that this might be his last go round. An icon of American rock and roll, the power house from Michigan is not playing any west coast shows. Would love to see Seger one last time but as of now, it’s not looking too good.
Ideal San Diego Venue: Cricket Wireless

1. Prince
The current Prince tour has been swooping into a town, grabbing it by the neck and blowing the roof off the place, leaving it breathless and begging for more. Prince is a musical genius and one hell of a live performer. And when he is on, no one can touch him. He has been doing extended runs in major cities across the country with his latest stop of 21 nights in Los Angeles. No way San Diego is going to pull this talent; where would he play? Los Angeles is only 2 hours away; I’m going!
Ideal San Diego Venue: umm — no, nothing around here that could house this once-in-a-lifetime event.

2011 Scouting Report: Serge Ibaka

Big Man Serge Ibaka Oklahoma City Thunder

We all know him for his recent success at this year’s slam dunk contest. I thought he did better than Blake Griffin, but that’s not important. We also may know Ibaka for those FIBA commercials, those crazy blocks, and just because we’re smart basketball guys. Now let’s dig a little deeper into the major role player for Scott Brooks’s team.

Ibaka is a poor ball-handle, and he isn’t a very good passer. In fact, he doesn’t really pass it at all. His huge problem is that he fouls far too much. If he wants to be a star in this league, Ibaka will have to cut down on his fouls. He cut down his per 40 minute foul total from 5.9 to 5, but there is still definitely room to grow. Ibaka is a solid rebounder and scorer that averages 14.4 and 10.7- a decent double double- per 40 minutes. Those aren’t star numbers, but they definitely describe what he is; a very good role player.

Serge Ibaka excels at blocking and has been the eighth best player this year in terms of pure defensive play. Ibaka is a monster on the inside, and blocking is far and away his best trait. He is quick, explosive, and is an overrated free throw shooter. There are some people that think he can shoot free throws, but he makes under 75 percent of his free throw attempts.

Ibaka plays around the rim and is a great inside scorer, but he struggles in the mid range game as he is a big man. The missed free throws don’t matter, because that’s not Ibaka’s game. He is a dunker that plays around the rim and blocks like heck. I wish he improved on the other facets of the game in order to become a better all-around player. The biggest problem I have with Ibaka is how much he fouls. Ibaka is solid in terms of shot selection, and he works around his shooting weaknesses. Ibaka is a good player in this league and invaluable to his team’s success. He isn’t a huge talent, but he is a guy you can depend upon to do his job game in and game out.

2011 Washington Redskins Football Schedule: Game-By-Game Predictions

As the players and the owners of the NFL move toward a court date, I have been writing about the 2011 schedules of the teams in the hopes that moving forward will create some type of “Karma.” While picking the winners of the 2011 games, keep in mind we do not have the dates of the games, the results of the draft and so forth. Was that enough of a “bailout?” I’m currently looking at the NFC East and the team in this article is the Washington Redskins. How will they do in 2011?

I am using FB Schedules website and for this article “2011 Washington Redskins Football Schedule.”

The Washington Redskins against the AFC East:

I don’t think the Redskins will do too badly against their own division. However, I do think they will be swept by a rejuvenated Dallas Cowboys team. A split with Philadelphia and the Giants gives them a 2-4 division record.

It is now that I think the Redskins’ season goes south.

The Washington Redskins against non-divisional teams on the road:

Washington visits Seattle, St. Louis, Carolina, Buffalo and Miami. Admittedly, there are some weak teams on this schedule. It may shock you but I think the Redskins go 0-5 on the road. I think they are the “upset” team for all the teams with problems like Buffalo and Carolina.

The Washington Redskins against non-divisional teams at home:

The Redskins play host to Arizona, the 49ers, Minnesota, the Patriots and the Jets. Things will not fare much better for the Washington fellows at home. The only win they will get will be against the Vikings. They will lose to the Cardinals, 49ers, New England and the New York Jets. So, they will be 1-4 at home.

It’s shocking I know, but every season we have a couple of teams with poor records and I think the Redskins will be one of those teams in 2011 with a 3-13 record.

I will remind you fans, as in an earlier paragraph and in other articles, that obviously I am mortal and will probably miss at least one or two predictions. So, if you’re a Redskins fan, don’t give up on my account.

Now the players and the owners, well that’s another story.

2011 Toy Guide: Best Toys for 4 & 5 Year Olds

Four and five year olds are getting ready for or just starting school. It’s a big time in their lives. Developmentally they have a growing vocabulary, increased fine motor skills and a little, or in some cases, a lot more of an attention span than when they were toddlers. Four and five year olds are extremely curious and absorbing new concepts like little sponges. This can make buying gifts for four and five year olds fun but also challenging. Many toys that say for ages three and up already seem too babyish and yet many of the cool toys seem to say that they are for ages six and up. Don’t worry. This list of the best gifts for four and five year olds is teacher recommended and kid approved.

B. Pop Arty Beads get an A plus.

Let’s start with the adorable container that has a seal tight lid and handle. Kids love to make and wear their own jewelry. These are not your grandmother’s beads. These beads are wild and wacky. They are very kid-attractive but they also have lots of nice chunky beads and good-sized holes for young hands. Here’s what’s really cool. There are over 500 snap-together pieces so kids can make bracelets, rings and necklaces. These B. Pop Arty Beads are around $30.00 at but I can attest that they give hours of fun for years.

The Cat in the Hat I Can Do That Game; you really should try it!

Everything Dr. Seuss is an awesome gift idea for this age group but I really love this game. Why? It’s active. Can you jump three times? It focuses on what kids ages four and up can do. The I Can Do That Game has one three toy awards. It’s available for Christmas 2012 from for under $20.00.

Imaginets magnetizes imaginations.

Imaginets aren’t new but they are a three-time toy award winner and remain a hot toy for good reason. Imaginets are colorful magnets varied in geometric shapes that come inside of a sturdy wooden case with a handle. I love toys that have their own storage system. The inside reveals two magnetic panels that mean pieces can be stored on one panel and imaginations can develop creations on the other. Imaginets also has 50 color cards to get kids started on copying patterns. Consider this your child’s first fun geometry lesson. This is a great gift for four year olds and I can attest that kids will keep playing with it well passed the age of eight. It’s a perfect toy for travel too and it’s available for Christmas 2011 from for around $27.00.

Pizza Mania is math smart and new for Christmas 2011.

Pizza Mania is a fun early math game for kids ages 4 to 8. While they create their own pizzas they’ll be “adding two peppers” and “taking away one pepperoni” and the fun and math learning will be multiplying through out this fun math game. Pizza Mania comes with pizzas for four, 48 fun toppings and an (adorable) talking pizza man. It does take three AA batteries but pizza man has volume control. There are two levels of play so the learning and fun can continue for years to come. Pizza Mania is a great gift for four and five year olds and it’s at for under $25.00 for Christmas 2011.

Young children learn best through play and creating and these games and manipulatives make for fun and smart gifts for four and five year olds. This winter when the it starts getting dark earlier and kids will spend less evening time outdoors, kids will enjoy having these games and creative toys to keep minds running, even when their bodies can’t.

Looking for math smart gift ideas for kindergarteners or first graders? You’ll find them here in 7 Best Toys for Kindergarteners and First Graders.

2011 Winter Classic: Caps Beat Penguins

Across the three rivers, stood an iced field where the Winter Classic was played under the elements of wind and rain. The Pittsburgh Penguins were the favorites to win the pond hockey event and the Washington Capitals despite their star power under Alex Ovechkin were considered the underdog. Around 68,000 fans showed up to watch the game, many traveling from Canada and Russia, others hometown fans wearing raincoats and hats to combat the elements.

Even Alex Ovechkin was surprised with the reception. “You can see, you can hear when we score goals how many people was fans of Washington. I can see a thousand people in one spot, a thousand people upstairs, it was really unbelievable. When it was the National Anthem, and they are screaming, like it was unbelievable,” he said during the post game interview.

Capitals goaltender Semyon Varlamov stopped 32 of 33 shots during the game. At 2:13 of the second period, Pittsburgh Penguin Evgeni Malkin through a wrist shot resulting in the first notch of the game. Capitals Mike Knuble scored on the power play and Eric Fehr followed once in the second period and again in the third period. Despite an attempt from the Pittsburgh Penguins to strike a power play goal in the third period, the score remained 3-1.

After a well publicized campaign on HBO’s 24/7, the Winter Classic comes to an end and so do the woes of the Washington Capitals who were depicted across their eight-game-losing streak on the show. The only ones who wanted to invite them back were the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“It helped for the buildup to this game and I feel a little let down seeing these guys go. Our guys are shaking hands and saying good-bye to the HBO crew because we feel like we’re sending a player down. But we’ll have to do our best to get back to normalcy, which is 41 games or 42 games left in our hockey season,” said Dan Bylsma in the post-game wrap up.

2011 Winter Classic.
