In March, Acura released the 2nd Generation of the Acura RDX. The fully redesigned entry-level premium CUV brings a new look to a growing market of fuel-efficient, entry level luxury consumers that may just propel it to the top of its class. The new RDX brings a level of affordability but sophistication to a class that is lacking for space and drive without compromising price.
Test driving the 2013 Acura RDX was a great experience, especially in a class that lacks luxury when you’re trying to keep cost relatively low. The first thing I noticed was that it had sufficient pick-up with its new 3.5 liter V6 engine, and at 270 horsepower, it is all you need to feel comfortable merging on the highway. It replaces a 4 cylinder that forced you to choose power over fuel-efficiency and had a slight lag in pick-up. The gains to this V6 engine is it is also equipped with a Variable Cylinder Management system that can switch between 6, 4, and 3 cylinders depending on where and how you are driving. The best part is that I really couldn’t tell when it switched between each cylinder setting.
The next thing I noticed was the new Intelligent all-wheel drive system is sufficient for everyday whether for the Northeast, allowing for comfortable handling and peace of mind when on the road. It also replaced the heavier less fuel-efficient Super-Handling all-wheel drive or SH-AWD that was on the 1st generation RDX since 2007. The Intelligent AWD system is a proven system by Honda, the parent company of Acura, in the CR-V model, which is the basic version of the RDX.
The final thing I noticed is the refined interior that got away from such a metallic and aggressive look. The interior has been toned down to reflect a more luxury based buyers dream. The Navigation system on the optional Tech package is a clear screen that gives me a clear view to my destination. It also gives me the power tailgate that allows me to close the back hatch easier when my hands are full.
The 2013 Acura RDX is a refreshing release by a brand that has been hit hard by Tsunami’s and bad looks. It delivers performance, reliability, and quality that Acura is known for in a whole new way. The consumers who take this car home are sure to be pleased with it for a long time to come.
